Musings #9: A Crush for All Seasons – Celebrities and Fantasy Characters
I’ve been challenged to write some “about me” blurbs about myself written in the third person for professional use.
Blech.
Instead I am going to procrastinate a little longer and instead post the crushes I’ve had over the years (with a couple of notable exclusions because I was brainwashed by TeenBeat and TigerBeat and TeenNothingOfSubstance magazines for a time in my youth).
1970s
Young Chekov and YoungDavy Jones and Tonto
These were the first men that made me grin like I loon when I watched them in reruns. I was really only four years old probably. I don’t know what it was about them specifically except they both had those young baby faces, nice teeth, awesome hair, and that adorable innocence. The Justin Beiber Fever of their day, except they were smart and not creepy. And whatever, Lone Ranger, I was all about Tonto. He was the man.
1980s
Johnny Depp (1987) Tom Cruise (1985) Billy Wirth (1987)
We still have that baby face look, but are beginning to enter that world of sexy. Just the right mix for a twelve-year-old and fourteen year old. Tom Cruise in Legend still gives me the giggle-grins. Nice turn of leg and he still had that innocence of a boy, but one foot firmly planted into manhood. As for Johnny Depp, he was a bit more edgy for the day. And he had an earring! This was a BIG deal and not at all cool with most parents of the decade. Billy Wirth played one of the lesser vampires in Lost Boys.
1990s
Keanu Reeves (1991) Adam Beach (1999) Captain Picard
I thought Keanu Reeves was American Indian and Asian. When I found out he was a mish-mosh of a whole lot of ethnic groups, I just fell deeper into the puppy crush. And Adam Beach in full on long hair and native — just… yes. As for Patrick Stewart, he is the first “older gentleman” crush: he is smart, reads, drinks tea, and survived horrid Cardassian tortures and became Locutus of Borg. Bald and torture suits him.
2000s
Legolas (2001) Brendan Fraser (2001) Brad Pitt (????)
Notice how I specifically named Legolas and not Orlando Bloom? That’s because I paid no attention to Mr. Bloom (sorry) until he went Elf. I don’t normally go for the blondes, but I dig the dude from Mirkwood. Especially when he is battle ready and dirty. Brendan Fraser in the Mummy Movies; yes. And, finally, Brad Pitt is in this section because even though I remember him from his very early Growing Pains cameo (or was it Saved by the Bell?) he has aged the best like a fine wine.
This is by no means an exhaustive list (sorry Travis Mayweather and new Mr. Spock and geeky, awkward Mr. Spencer Reid, and others, I adore and revere the most awesome original Spock but I didn’t crush on him) but looking back on it I seem to have a definite type. Intelligent, dark-haired, with a dose of athletic (even Spencer wields a gun). My husband is a dark-haired mix of jock and nerd with a smidge of Native American in his ancestry, so there’s that. Now if I could just get him to wear a kilt for Halloween…

In the 70s it was Joey Heatherton and Kate Jackson and Joyce Dewitt; the 80s, it was Jan Smithers and Annie Potts. Since then, I don’t have crushes. My wife is my type…she tollerates and loves me, what more could I ask for in a woman. 😉

Omg this list, yes! Tom Cruise in the 80s *swoooooon*! And you get extra points for the Picard mention. Damn those Cardassians! There are FOUR lights!!!!
PS: Cardassians really rhymes with Kardashians. Coincidence? I think not!

I don’t ever think I ever wrote a fan letter. Maybe once to Ralph Macchio? I was maybe 8? I don’t remember it ever getting mail though.

You are amazing and I thank you so much for writing this. It’s good to know that I’m not the only girl who crushed on Brendan Fraser.
I enjoyed reading this timeline of sorts. It reminded me of times in the early 2000s when my family occasionally had free access to HBO (okay, there was free HBO one weekend a month for quite a while) and I, this twelve year old, would sit close to the TV, watch the first two The Mummy movies, Bedazzled, and Monkeybone in just a few hours, and obsessively go through TV Guide to see if Mr. Fraser had any talk show appearance to discuss his latest movie at the time (The Quiet American).
Can’t say I ever found Johnny Depp attractive except for that movie where he had scissors for hands. But then again, I’m the girl who thought Beetlejuice was hot.
